Fiber optic Internet is fast, powerful, and future-proof — but some technical terms can be confusing.
This guide explains the key terms so you know exactly how Sky Fiber works.
What is fiber optic Internet?
Fiber optic Internet uses glass cables to transmit data as pulses of light — allowing much faster and more reliable speeds than older copper technologies.
With Sky Fiber, you get a direct high-speed Internet line into your home.
From the internet to your router: how FTTH* works
Common terms explained simply:
- *FTTH – Fiber to the Home
This means the fiber cable runs directly into your home, not just to the street or building.
→ Your benefit: no shared lines or copper cables. You get maximum speed and performance.
- *POP – Point Of Presence
A technical hub in the telecom network, usually a few kilometers from your home.
→ It connects the broader Internet backbone to the local fiber network that serves your building or neighborhood.
- *BEP – Building Entry Point
This is where the fiber cable enters your building (for apartments) or your house.
→ From the BEP, the cable continues to your individual unit or room, ending at the OTO.
→ If no BEP is available, just fill in the form during the order — Sky will contact you as soon as your address is eligible.
- *OTO – Optical Termination Outlet
This is the fiber socket on your wall — the final point where the fiber network connects to your equipment.
→ If your home already has an OTO, installation is quick. If not, a technician will install one.
- *ONT – Optical Network Terminal
This device converts the fiber signal into data that your devices can use.
→ Sky provides an ONT as part of the Sky Fiber Kit, ensuring full compatibility and easy setup.
- *WLAN-Router – Wireless Local Area Network Router
The WLAN-Router connects to your ONT and distributes the Internet signal throughout your home, either via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cables.
→ Sky includes a preconfigured WLAN-Router in your Sky Fiber Kit, optimized for fiber-speed performance, dual-band Wi-Fi, and easy installation.
→ It allows all your devices (smartphones, computers, TVs, etc.) to connect to the Internet wirelessly or via cable.
- Mbps / Gbps – Megabits or Gigabits per second
This measures your connection speed:
- 1 Gbps = 1,000 Mbps = very fast
- Sky Fiber proposes speeds up to 2.5 Gbps, depending on your plan
- Latency / Ping
This is the time it takes for data to travel back and forth from your device to the Internet.
→ Lower latency = better experience for video calls, gaming, and streaming.
