Why is the video quality limited to 720p on my Android device (smartphone, tablet, or Smart TV), or on the Sky website when streaming on Sky?
The video quality is limited to 720p on certain Android devices and from the Sky.ch website due to restrictions imposed by rights holders for security reasons related to Digital Rights Management (DRM). These restrictions are in place to protect the streaming content.
Some Android devices are equipped with Widevine L1 DRM, allowing streaming at resolutions higher than 720p. However, devices with Widevine L3 are limited to a maximum quality of 720p.
Internet browsers lacking the hardware capability to handle DRM restrictions also limit the streaming quality to 720p.
What is Widevine L1 and L3?
Widevine is a digital rights management technology developed by Google. There are two security levels: Widevine L1 and L3. Widevine L1 allows streaming content at resolutions higher than 720p, while Widevine L3 limits the quality to 720p.
How can I check if my Android smartphone or tablet is compatible with Widevine L1?
- Go to the "Settings" on your Android device.
- Look for the "Security" or "Security and Privacy" option.
- In the security settings, search for the "Digital Certificates" or "Digital Rights Management" option.
- If you find the Widevine DRM option with "L1" mentioned, it means your device supports Widevine L1, and you can enjoy maximum video quality on Sky.
- If you do not find the Widevine DRM option or if it indicates "L3," it means your device is limited to a maximum quality of 720p when streaming on Sky.
